Serve on Work Crew

When you attended Malibu, did you notice that the tables in the dining hall were perfectly set for each meal?  Did you observe that the carpet in the club room was always freshly vacuumed? And did you realize that your bathroom was immaculately cleaned everyday?

These tasks and many others were carried out by a group of high school students who volunteered to give up a month of their life to serve so that YOU could have the best week of your life! In Young Life, we call these amazing volunteers the "Work Crew."

Every summer we need high school students to volunteer to make our camps run smoothly. How about you? Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of others? As a month-long volunteer on Work Crew, you'll be surrounded by other people from all over the country who, like yourself, want their lives to count for something and who desire to serve as Jesus did thousands of years ago. The hours can be long and the work tedious, but you will grow in your faith in ways you never imagined possible. It may even be the greatest month of your life!

The following requirements are expected of anyone who wants to serve on Work Crew:
  • You must have completed grades 10, 11, or 12 in high school and not yet started college.
  • You must be actively involved in Campaigners or your church youth group.
You should consider yourself a Christian and be striving to follow Jesus.
  • You must have previously attended Malibu or Canyon as a camper.
  • You must participate in a Work Crew training course prior to your departure.
You can work at any of Young Life's 20+ camps, but most people from
Bellevue Young Life will be assigned to Malibu, Canyon, or Creekside. Please note that while we will recommend you for the camp and position of your choice, you may be assigned to work at a different camp doing a job you may not really want to do. It is important that you have a humble attitude and be willing to accept whatever is offered.

"Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people." - Ephesians 6:7

Typical Work Crew jobs include the following:
  • Bakery
  • Dining Hall Server
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Pit Crew (Dishwasher)
  • Roustabout (General Work)

To apply, you must first be recommended by a Young Life leader. Please click the orange button below to contact us and let us know you are interested in applying. We'll then get the process started for you. Please be sure to apply BEFORE February 1 of each year.

Check out this video made by Young Life to give you a glimpse of the amazing time you will have spending a month serving on Work Crew. We hope you'll apply!

We know that asking your parents if you can spend a month volunteering at a camp for no pay when you should be studying for SATs or applying for college may sound like an impossible task, but remember...other students in Bellevue have done it, and maybe you can too! After all, you will be credited with approximately 300 hours of community service for volunteering on Work Crew, so that is certainly a big selling point. Furthermore, you will have a unique and genuine experience that could be the basis for an interesting college essay or interview topic.
Most importantly, pray about whether or not you should serve. Maybe high school is not the best time... Perhaps you should wait until you are in college, and then you can serve on Summer Staff, which is almost identical to Work Crew except that it is for college students instead of for high school students. In any case, do not make any decision in haste; pray, talk to your parents, and seek wisdom from people you trust.

"Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you." - Psalm 37:5
